Using 5G antennas with low loss cables – how to minimize losses?

When installing a 5G (or 4G) outdoor antenna often the antenna might have an integral 5M or 10M cable or alternatively you might need to use low loss coaxial cables in longer runs to connect the antenna to the router. Whichever option you are using, analysing the cable type and the length of the cable to ensure you are introducing too much loss into the system is important.

We often see that 5G and 4G outdoor antennas with integral 5M cables use lower quality coaxial cable that exhibit losses per metre far in excess of better quality cables. In some cases, the coaxial cable used on the antenna might almost negate what the antenna can deliver in gain. For example, an outdoor antenna with 3 dBi gain at 900 MHz that uses a typical 5M RG58 cable will have 2.1 dB to 2.6 dB loss across the cable run, leaving an effective gain of 0.4 to 0.9 dB. Using a 10M integral RG58 cable would mean that the cable losses would exceed the antenna gain in this instance.

At higher frequencies such as 1800 MHz, the losses across RG58 are much greater than at 900 MHz meaning that it is also good to know which exact bands your 5G / 4G system is running on so you can better calculate the effectiveness of your antenna installation.

Using a RF240 low loss cable over 5M, the loss across the cable is approximately 1.25 dB and over 10M 2.5 dB. RF240 is 1mm larger in diameter than RG58, but the electrical properties are far superior especially for longer cable runs or higher frequencies. Therefore, it might worth considering an antenna with a coaxial connector termination (check our FGO-Max as an example) and using a hjgher grade extension cable to maximise the effective gain in the system.

Furthermore, for even longer coaxial cable runs, you could deploy 400 type cable. This is typically 10.2mm in diameter, but the loss per metre specifications are very good. Particularly ideal for 15M, 20M and 25M cable runs, RF400 cables would exhibit approximately half the losses of RF240 at 900 MHz i.e. 0.66 dB for a 5M cable run. Therefore, at 15M you would need to factor in approximately a 2 dB loss at 900 MHz.

Another issue with integral cables on external antennas is what to do with excess cable? What do you do if you only need 3M or 7M cables, but the standard configurations for the antennas offer 5M or 10M cables? Excess cable in the installation means unnecessary loss (and also coiled excess cable looks very unsightly!). Using custom length low loss cables means using only the exact cable length you need thereby improving efficiency in the system.

The SMO2458 WiFi spring mounted omni antenna is designed for direct mount in mobile applications. Installed via its TNC-Male connector, this dual-band WiFi antenna has spring at the base. This allows it to flex which allows it to better withstand shocks and impacts than a rigid antenna. Ideal in environments where there is the potential for low-hanging branches, foliage and other obstacles, this antenna is robust and durable.

Supporting frequencies from 2200-2500 & 4400-5900 MHz, the antenna offers consistent gain across the bands. Being lightweight, it is also suitable for small vehicles and unmanned mobile systems. It measures approximately 186mm in overall length and being only 15mm in diameter has a small footprint when installed.

The SMO7270 4G spring mounted omni antenna is designed for direct mount in mobile applications. Installed via its TNC-Male connector, this 4G antenna has spring at the base. Supporting frequencies from 700 to 2700 MHz, the antenna offers consistent gain across the bands. Being lightweight, it is also suitable for small vehicles and unmanned mobile systems. It measures approximately 287mm in overall length and being only 22mm in diameter has a small footprint when installed.

LCO6150 4G/5G compact

LCO6150 4G/5G compact outdoor omni antenna

The LCO6150 4G/5G compact outdoor omni antenna is designed for wall-mounted 5G and 4G access installations. It is easily mounted via the stainless steel L-bracket. Terminated in a N-Female connector, the LCO6160 can be combined with low loss coaxial cables to fit the applications.

This antenna operates from 617 MHz to 5000 MHz covering most major 4G and 5G frequencies. Housed in a UV-resistant, weatherproof white ASA sheath, the LCO6150 is intended for long-term outdoor deployment. Ideal for telemetry, metering, security systems and access applications, it’s small form factor makes it a good choice where a highly visible antenna is undesirable.

FGO-Max 5G High Gain

FGO-Max 5G High Gain Outdoor Omni Antenna

The FGO-Max 5G high gain outdoor omni is a wideband 5G (and 4G) antenna covering a frequency range from 600-4500 MHz. Based on our proven 4G FGO antenna, the FGO-Max is designed for long term, outdoor wall or pole mounting.

Offering robust and consistent RF performance with average gain of 3 dBi in the 600-960 MHz and average gain of 5.5 – 6.5 dBi in the higher bands, the FGO-Max is ideal for 5G access applications where a high gain single port outdoor antenna is required. It’s fibreglass sheath and stainless steel bracket lend themselves well to long term outdoor deployment make the antenna a good fit for utilities, security and monitoring/telemetry applications.

For durability of installation, the antenna is supplied with an AISI-304 stainless steel bracket and is mounted via the N-Female connectors and three M3 mounting screws. The bracket comes with a U-bolt for pole mounting (pole diameter 40-60mm) or the bracket can be affixed to a wall.

5G MIMO omni antennas

5G MIMO omni antennas for outdoor deployments

5G MIMO omni antennas to complement 5G/router applications can be mounted outdoors. Installed on a wall, pole or in some cases a rail, these antennas offer durability and performance to help maximise signal reception.

What features are needed for outdoor MIMO antennas?

Considerations should be UV-resistant housing or radomes, waterproofing to prevent ingress of moisture and flexibility of mounting options. Additionally, consistent gain across the bands and the ability to hook up to customised low loss coaxial cables are key.

In some applications, low profile and more discreet antenna solutions are required. Therefore, the antenna radomes should be compact and aesthetically pleasing. Ease of installation is also important, antennas that can be deployed quickly and securely mean that applications can be online in short time.

Most 5G/4G routers today have multiple antenna ports – MIMO (mulitple in, multiple out). Therefore, outdoor antennas need multiple antenna elements inside to maximise functionality. Some routers have 2 antenna ports, some may have 4 or more. The three 5G MIMO omni antennas we’ll look at here, have either 2 or 4 antenna elements inside.

The LPO-Max is a 4 port, high gain, MIMO, 5G outdoor omni antenna. Housed in UV-resistant radome, the antenna can be wall, pole or rail-mounted via an optional bracket. Connecting to 5G routers, the LPO-Max supports most 5G worldwide frequencies from 600-6000 MHz. Combine with low loss cables such as RF240, to customise the installation to the requirements of the application.

The LPO6938-4P is a 4 port, medium gain 5G outdoor omni antenna. Similiar to the LPO-Max, it radome is UV-resistant and weatherproof and uses the same bracket for mounting. Its overall height is less than the LPO-Max and whilst it only supports 690-3800 MHz for 5G frequencies it is a lot more discreet, ideal where low visibility is important.

With its own bracket for wall-mounting, the LMO6138 is a 2 port 4G/5G antenna. Waterproof and housed in UV-resistant radome, the LMO6138 antenna offer robust gain across a frequency range of 600-3800 MHz. Combine with custom low loss cables to customise the installation.

Whichever of these 5G outdoor omni antennas is most suitable for your application will depend on factors such as your 5G router, mounting requirements, available cable choices, but all three are designed to give you a long-lasting and stable signal when mounting permanently outdoors.

VMO 5G MIMO low profile puck antenna

The VMO 5G MIMO antenna is a low profile puck designed to complement 5G routers and devices. Based on our popular CMO antenna, the VMO offers two wideband 4G/5G ports covering 600-6000 MHz.

A permanent, through-hole mount antenna, the VMO is IP67 rated when mounted securely on a flat metal surface.The VMO mounts via a threaded stud and is held in place by a robust locking nut. In conjunction with the gasket underneath, a waterproof seal against a flat mounting surface can be formed ensuring that the antenna is suited to continuous outdoor deployment. The VMO antenna operates most effectively if it is mounted onto a metal surface, enclosure or bracket. The mounting hole size is 20mm.

Ideal for both fixed and mobile 5G applications, the VMO 5G MIMO puck antenna lends itself well to security, CCTV and 5G access applications where antenna ports are required to connect to the router.

The FTR6072 wideband blade antenna is designed for direct mounting onto 5G routers and devices. Housed in a black, nylon sheath, the FTR6072 mounts directly via a SMA-Male connector.

The FTR6072 wideband 5G terminal blade antenna is designed for direct mounting onto 5G routers and devices. Housed in a black, nylon sheath, the FTR6072 mounts directly via a SMA-Male connector. Based on our proven WTR7270 mechanical design, the FTR6072 is a very neat solution for portable and fixed devices.

This antenna supports frequencies from 600 MHz to 7200 MHz with consistent gain across the bands. This allows it to operate at most 5G frequencies worldwide. CLO 4G/5G low profile puck antenna

The CLO 4G/5G low profile puck antenna is a permanent mount antenna, housed in a tough and durable enclosure. The antenna is a screw-mount antenna requiring a 20mm mounting hole. The cable exit is on the underside of the antenna and once mounted is totally enclosed, watertight to IP67 and secure.

This low profile antenna is secured in place by a nut that is tightened from underneath. The CLO is ideal 4G/5G fixed and mobile applications such as metering, security and telematics applications where a discreet antenna is required, but performance cannot be compromised. The CLO should be mounted onto a metal surface.

The formal part code for this antenna is FCLO35358-SM-2K for the model with a 2M cable and SMA-Male connector.

    • a omni-directional antenna is an antenna that radiates in every direction.
  2. What characteristics does a good helium omni antenna need?
    • A good outdoor helium omni antenna needs to combine effective RF performance with excellent build quality. Reliable gain figures are important for planning your deployment and the use of quality materials such as fibreglass tubes to ensure longevity when exposed long term to UV from sunlight and the weather.
  3. What mounting options are possible?
    • A good helium antenna will offer multiple mounting possibilities. Limiting the mounting to only pole mount or only wall-mount is restrictive therefore an antenna that offers both mounting options is preferred.
  4. Is the choice of RF cable important for Helium deployments?
    • The selection of quality RF cable is important for Helium antenna deployments especially for longer cable runs where it is critical to minimize signal losses (attenuation) over the length of the cable. For 10M or 20M cables, look towards 240 or 400 type cables respectively to mitigate signal losses.
  5. Is a surge arrestor required for Helium installs?
    • This is really a question for the installer. In the UK lightning strikes are very rare, so typically surge protectors are not used as the chance of a strike is so low. However, a “belt-and-braces” approach might be considered where a surge protector is used.

Helium outdoor antennas things to check before you buy

The Helium network offering low power coverage across the world is rapidly growing in popularity. Across the world, as Helium miners are being deployed, people are looking at outdoor omni-directional antennas to optimise coverage from each miner installed.

This brief comment is going to focus on build quality.

There are quite a few outdoor antennas on the market, but selecting one with build quality good enough to be permanently installed outdoors without falling apart is critical.

Many low (and very low) cost antennas are available from online market places. Ignoring poor RF performance for now, many of these low cost antennas suffer from poor build quality or inferior materials and are unlikely to survive one average winter outdoors.

Our suggestion is to look for European-manufactured Helium outdoor antennas that tend to focus on quality materials and not solely on price. One particular area to focus on is the sheath or tube as poor materials weather and crack very rapidly leading to unit failure. A proven, durable option is an antenna with a fibreglass tube which will withstand many winter’s deployment without suffering weather or UV-degradation.

Also check the brackets/clamps that come with antenna. Are they fit for purpose? Is the antenna secure enough when mounted?

There is nothing worse than having to replace the antenna you took the trouble to install three months ago due poor survivability of the materials.

The 5G AllDisc High Performance low profile antenna is in stock. Manufactured by Smarteq, this antenna is best in class for its gain vs. size raito. Measuring 138mm in diameter and 55mm in height, the AllDisc offers peak gain, when mounted on a groundplan, from 3.5 dbi to 7 dBi.
